Planning note
How many fixtures, where the wire can run, and whether a tree can carry a downlight are all answered by standing in the yard. A phone call gets you close; a walk-through gets you a number.

A transformer steps household power down to 12 volts and feeds outdoor-rated fixtures through buried cable. It is safer to work around than line voltage, easier to modify later, and the standard for residential landscape lighting.
Cast brass and copper fixtures commonly last well over a decade outdoors and develop a patina rather than corroding. Integrated LED modules and lamps have their own service life and are the usual replacement item.
LED landscape lighting draws very little. A typical residential system runs on a fraction of the power an older halogen system needed for the same brightness.
Wire is buried in a narrow trench a few inches deep. Sod and decomposed granite are cut and replaced, and runs are routed around irrigation lines and root zones.
Usually, if the transformer has spare capacity and the existing wiring is sound. We measure voltage on the current runs before adding load.
Most systems run on an astronomical timer that follows sunset through the year. Photocells and app-based zoned control with dimming are also options.
Yes. Aiming in daylight is guesswork. We return after dark to aim, shield glare, and balance brightness between areas.

The entry and the walk to it, then one or two trees that carry the view from the street, then the strongest piece of architecture. Water features, stonework, and specimen planting come after that. Lighting a small number of things well reads better than lighting everything evenly.
It makes moving around one safer, which is the practical benefit: lit steps, grade changes, and walkways. A property with no dark gaps is also less inviting to walk onto. Landscape lighting is not a security system and we will not sell it as one, but it removes the hazards and blind spots darkness creates.
