A backyard feels comfortable when the boundary is visible and the center is soft: lit planting borders, lit walls, lit trees, and very little pointed at the people.
Seated eye level is around three and a half feet. Anything brighter than the surroundings at that height becomes the thing everyone looks at, so fixtures either go lower, get shielded, or move behind planting.

A backyard has more than one mode. Dinner outside, a party, and letting the dog out at eleven are three different lighting scenes. Splitting the system into zones lets the pool border, the seating area, and the far planting run independently.
Timers handle the default. App or switch control handles the rest.
